Spring arrives on the Durango & Silverton Railroad

493 at Durango Depot with snow on the mountains.
Afternoon train from Cascade Canyon crossing the Animas to enter Durango.
Durango & Silverton rolling stock.
Harris who, apparently, has a 'Ph.D in Museum'.  He does though.
Nothing like cold air and hot steam to set up a picture.
Train crew at Durango.
Heading up the line towards Rockwood.
Horseshoe Bend.
Classic Durango & Silverton shot - sheer rock faces, twisting track ...
... and the river below.
Shunting the yard at Rockwood.  A rock fall had disrupted services so this was some unscheduled 'real railroading'.
The Conductor hitching a lift to the other end of the yard.
Waiting for air lines to be coupled.
Waiting for the 'right away' at Rockwood.
The return to Rockwood.  Shots like this usually involve a long lens and the camera set to a wide aperture and high shutter speed.  An open sided Gondola Car made getting the shot easier but the temperatures were not much above zero - though the Concessions Car was conveniently the next in the train.
Bill has been working on the line for over thirty years ...
... and his son is a qualified steam engineer too.
493 at speed north of Durango.  Whistles blowing as a level crossing is being approached - Bill in charge.
